West Central Region

Heart of a Nation

Venture back in time to the place of ancient tipi rings and medicine wheels, major fur trade routes and the signing of historical treaties between First Nations and the Government of Canada. You'll learn of this area's rich, unmatched heritage, influenced by colourful Métis culture and by the settlers who created the first capital of the Northwest Territories.

The events of the North West Resistance of 1885 helped shape our nation, and this fascinating story is told at Batoche and Battleford national historic sites, as well as at Fort Carlton and Fort Pitt provincial historic parks. Guided horseback riding trips, birdwatching and nature walks are favourite outdoor activities. And you can venture even further back in time: located just outside Saskatoon, Wanuskewin Heritage Park interprets 6,000 years of Plains Indian culture.
