2009 Canadian Challenge Dog Sled Race
February 17 – 22, 2009
The Canadian Challenge sled dog race for the Cameco Cup is a 12-dog continuous mid-distance race held in northern Saskatchewan. Now in its 12th year, the Canadian Challenge is Canada's premiere mushing race from Prince Albert to La Ronge, Stanley Mission, Grandmother's Bay on the Churchill River, then back to La Ronge. At approximately 600 kilometres or 375 miles in length, this 12-dog race is a qualifier for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race and the Yukon Quest.
The race follows a route similar to that of the old sled dog trail used for years by trappers, the North West Mounted Police and the First Nations community to travel between Prince Albert and La Ronge.
The Canadian Challenge is recognized as a world-class sporting event and is the longest sled dog race that starts, runs and finishes in Canada. The race has attracted teams from across Canada, the United States, Australia, Germany, Serbia and Belgium. An added highlight is the 8-dog race from Prince Albert to La Ronge. This race runs in conjunction with the 12-dog sled race on its way up to La Ronge.
The Canadian Challenge is sponsored by the Gateway North Sled Dog Race Association, which is a non-profit organization formed in 1994 to promote traditional sled dog racing in Saskatchewan. Funds raised go to charitable organizations. This year's beneficiary is the Saskatchewan Children's Wish Foundation. For more information about the Canadian Challenge 2009, click here.
