Saskatchewan Group of "Breast Friends" Tame CBC's Dragons

On the December 8, 2010 episode of CBC's Dragons' Den, a group of women called “Breast Friends” from Foam Lake, Saskatchewan, stood before the Dragons not asking for money, but for advice. However, in the end, they walked away with both.

In fact, they walked away with double what they asked for!

"We didn't want money from the Dragons," said Patti Hack, one of the 10 members of the Breast Friends group. "We have money; we wanted marketing advice."

Breast Friends wanted to cash in on the expertise of the five multi-millionaire Dragons, to help them market their cookbooks nationally. Breast Friends cookbooks are already successful having raised more than $1 million for the fight against cancer.

Currently, their cookbooks are selling well regionally and in some areas of Canada and the United States, but these 10 women knew they had to get creative in order to take their books to a larger market. 

Because they are a non-profit and not a company that the Dragons’ could own a part of, the volunteer women decided to ask the Dragons for $25,000 worth of marketing advice. In return, they offered to make $50,000 in cancer donations to the Dragons' cancer charities of choice.

In the end, all five Dragons came on board. But, instead of the $25,000 asked for, the Dragons offered Breast Friends $50,000 to market their fundraising cookbooks. And in turn, five cancer charities each receive $10,000 donations.

"It's been a great experience. We were fortunate. We didn't see dragons at all. We saw nothing but gracious, warm, caring people who are willing to open their wallets and give to charity," Hack said.
